CLEVELAND, Ga. – A privately owned Flock Safety camera positioned to monitor the parking lot of a White County gun store is being removed after growing concerns over automated license plate reader technology left some customers worried about their privacy.
Michael Carter, owner of Gun Commanders on U.S. 129 in Cleveland, told Now Georgia the camera was installed roughly two years ago for one purpose: to help protect his employees, customers, and business from crime.
Carter privately owns the camera, not the White County Sheriff’s Office. According to Carter, it was configured to send hit-list notifications to the sheriff’s office when it detected a vehicle associated with a law enforcement alert. Carter said the system was not installed to monitor customers or create a list of people visiting the gun store.
Gun Commanders has operated in Cleveland since 2013, with Carter purchasing the business in 2020. The business is both a federally licensed firearms dealer and firearms manufacturer. Federal records confirm Georgia Firearms Holding Company LLC, doing business as Gun Commanders, currently holds federal firearms licenses at its U.S. 129 location.

A good business position Not to do so.
Life is full of choices.
There will still be multiple cameras on site to address the needed issues. Just not Flock cameras.
Erect a WIDE banner, on his own public property, with the words of the 2nd and 4th amendment quite legible.
the kicker being, this big banner blocks the camera’s view of the parking lot ;-)

If it’s HIS camera, that shifts the whole discussion. Does he share the video? Is it like any other security camera?
It’s certainly not like my privately owned cameras which record to my privately owned hard drive.
I share the video if I see a good reason to share, or perhaps on a court order. Never had either situation transpire.
Fundamentally, I have a really expensive game camera and “Amazon has been here” alert system.
No way Flock cannot find a way to access this “private” camera.
I have to laugh at all of this Flock BS. I don’t think people have any idea of the cameras that are arrayed around most every city in this country. No, they don’t look up license plates. But they are HD 4K and you can read any license plates on every car that comes and goes down the street. What they cannot do is automatically track the car as it leaves the scene of a crime and follow them out of town.
You are being tracked all the time.
If someone doesn’t want to be tracked, don’t go into a city; don’t take your phone; and don’t walk by any number of homes with Ring doorbells.
