I always look forward to threads about space and astronomy. Even though I’ve been in this hobby for about 50 years I know that I can learn a lot from many of you. Sometimes I wonder how much I’ve really learned in that time. What’s cool about astronomy is that there is always more to learn, new discoveries made, and discoveries waiting to be made.

One thing I have learned over the years is that we can let differences get in the way SO MUCH that we make enemies out of friends. I’ve done it-I’ve had others do it to me. Not so much here, but in my personal life.

I always got along good with people I worked with who were democrats-AS LONG AS WE DIDN’T TALK POLITICS. Work, sports, food, beer. It’s good to have ground rules.

There was a friend of mine in the astronomy club who I admired very much for his knowledge and his ability to communicate astronomy to people who would come to our observatory. I also admired his jokes over a few beers.

There were a couple of times when we got into it over politics- he was extremely liberal. Harsh words said-hard feelings created. We then agreed not to talk politics, since we weren’t going to change each other’s minds.

I haven’t seen him in over twenty years. He won’t come to meetings anymore.

I guess what I’m trying to say is we can agree to disagree, but we all DO have similar beliefs in other subjects, let’s focus on what we DO agree on.Let’s just not be so nasty to each other.

Let’s save it for the liberals.
