MIT student claims he synthesized one of the deadliest chemicals known to man — sparking massive hazmat response

A student at MIT claimed he synthesized one of the world’s deadliest chemicals last week — sparking a massive hazmat response and the closure of the lab where he worked.

The unidentified grad student arrived at a local emergency room, saying he had synthesized dimethyl mercury, a highly toxic compound that can be fatal if exposed to humans in even the smallest amounts, NBC Boston reported.

The student was not authorized to be working with the compound and it was not part of his research, according to school officials.

MIT closed off Building 18 where the experiment took place on Wednesday and called in city emergency responders to begin the cleanup.

Common areas in the student’s residence hall were also professionally cleaned as a precaution, and the student’s room was sealed off.

Building 18 remained closed through Sunday as testing and investigations continued.

“Emerging information calls into question whether this compound was in fact synthesized,” an MIT spokesperson said on Saturday.

“We are also able to disclose, with the student’s permission, that while the student remains under medical supervision, their initial blood test result, which was received today, shows no sign of exposure to mercury,” the spokesperson continued.

Dimethyl mercury can pose “a serious environmental and health hazard,” according to studies in the EPA’s Health Environmental Research Online database.

It was previously responsible for the death of Dartmouth College chemistry professor Karen Wetterhahn in 1997 after she got just one to two drops on her hand while wearing gloves.

It was also used in the assassination of a German labor union boss in 2012.

Interesting toxin. It appears to take months to have an effect. Not a good weapon, but may have been used in assassinations.

I’m mortally terrified of di-hydrogen monoxide.

It’s one of the largest killers known to mankind.

Maybe he can get a job with Dr Fauci. They seem to have a lot in common.

No mention of his name.

Considering the source something tells me that they are not being as forthcoming as they would be if he had a Trump sticker on his dorm door.

“”I’m mortally terrified of di-hydrogen monoxide.””

How about DMSO? Any relation? I think you have to be a chemist to understand any of it. DMSO used to be banned in the US...I ordered it years ago and it had to be mailed in a plain brown wrapper. I used it for back pain and the only thing I remember about it was it had a slight burn when applied but not so bad that you couldn’t use it.

It’s one of the largest killers known to mankind.

And that's why when I order a Scotch & Di-hydrogen Monoxide, I always say "easy on the di-hydrogen monoxide".

Red Chinese. They have way more STEM grad students in chemistry. Also, Muslims study things that go BOOM. ChiComs study things that go "eeewwwwwww!"

Sounds like something terrorists countries would use against us. What are the lead up symptoms. MIT needs to look for those too...

DMSO wasn’t actually banned it just couldn’t be sold for OTC medical use.

I don’t know if it works for medical issues or not but one of the problems is nobody will pay for clinical trials for a chemical that is widely available and has no patent protection.

Therefore it didn’t receive FDA clearance.

“”DMSO; do you taste garlic after application?””

Possible but it was so long ago that I’ve forgotten most things about it except the sensation of “heat” when I used it. I remember the trouble I had finding a small plastic pump bottle I could pour some into so it was easier to use. I still have that bottle - LOL... I looked online and DMSO is available everywhere now - even Walmart..

I remember the late 1980s when many college students signed petitions to ban Di-Hydrogen-Monoxide!
