It's a scientific fact that giant great apes once existed, but it can't be conclusively proven that they are went extinct. It's just that they aren't commonly seen, but neither are other animals that were believed to have gone extinct but have been rediscovered out in the wild places. Some species like the Thylacine and Thylacoleo are rumored to still exist, but land owners fear that reporting them would lead to the government condemning the land to protect an endangered species, what a rediscovered cryptozoological species would obviously be considered.
