The boom in NFP's and NGO's has resulted in a shortage of small public accounting firms who are willing or able to prepare 990's for new organizations, let alone conduct audits when those are required.

And I am going to guess that the IRS has been more lenient than it should be on those "charities". After all, who wants to be the bad person who determines that a "charity" is cheating and stealing money?

Those Learing Centers, and the Medicare/Medicaid frauds? That should all have been brought out with any reasonably competent audit even before the government files for recovery of the funds.

The auditors, the state agencies responsible for administering the federal grants, the IRS, there is a lot of icompotence or complicity involved.

DOGE should not sounded like magic. All of the fraud and waste shoulda woulda coulda been caught and made public a long long time ago.
