Your Best Film Noir

Posted on 08/08/2026 2:55:55 PM PDT by Tacrolimus1mg

I'm looking to introduce my future husband to some film noir, either on DVD, streaming or film (I have a number of projectors to choose from). He didn't watch a lot of classic movies growing up, and we're both late eighties babies, so there wasn't a ton of it on TV to begin with. I didn't really get to indulge this hobby until my dad started restoring projectors.

List me your favorite noir films, popular or obscure. I'd like to see some I haven't heard of before.

Thank you in advance!

Foreign Intrigue (1956) starring Robert Mitchum. I saw it once for free on youtube. Robert Mitchum is my favorite actor.

Anything with Humphrey Bogart. His films were excellent.

This might be very recent, but I think Roman Polanski’s CHINATOWN ( starring Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway and John Huston ) could be included in the Film Noir genre.

Roman Polanski’s Chinatown (1974) is widely regarded as one of the definitive masterpieces of Neo-Noir—the modern evolution of classic film noir.

While traditional film noir refers to the black-and-white crime dramas of the 1940s and 1950s (such as The Maltese Falcon or Double Indemnity), Chinatown ( filmed in color ) deliberate revisits and updates those classic conventions.

Consider the features of Chinatown:

The Hardboiled Detective: Jack Nicholson plays J.J. “Jake” Gittes, a cynical private eye specializing in matrimonial cases who stumbles into a massive, lethal conspiracy.

The Femme Fatale: Faye Dunaway portrays Evelyn Mulwray, a mysterious, glamorous woman with deep secrets who draws the detective further into danger.

Systemic Corruption: Rather than a simple crime story, the plot exposes high-level municipal greed, water rights exploitation, and moral depravity as personified by John Huston in 1930s Los Angeles.

Besides the ones listed, ‘Double Indemnity’ with Fred Mac Murray, Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward G Robinson is worth seeing. Another that you might like is Quai des Orfèvres (1947), a French film that is quite a bit different, if you are comfortable with either French or subtitles.

Is “Leave Her To Heaven” considered film noir? I really liked that.
