My maternal grandmother left Poland in 1927, so she missed the Holocaust, thank G-d. My paternal grandfather left Odessa around 1914 to avoid getting drafted in the Czar’s army. In Yiddish, there is a joke that I’ll say in Roman letters: He said, “Genug tzurus in velt (”tzurus” means trouble, plenty of which the Tsar dealt out, especially to Jews),” so he boarded a ship to America and became a somewhat wealthy man.

And yes, victimization is no good in the long run, I think, when it is used for obvious political gain.
Still, I do believe that compassion towards all victims of war and genocide is a good and G.dly feeling.
I just don’t know how to properly separate the two. It seems that there is a ‚macro-level‘ to it, which is on the scale of nations, their governments and power elites - and then there is the ‚micro-level‘ of individual human beings.
For instance, I thought that the counterstrikes of the Israeli armed forces after the bestial atrocity of Oct. 7th were absolutely justified.
Still I felt sorry on a human level about the Arab toddlers and infants, who did not survive.
Luckily, there were not many of them, since ZaHal uses the highest restraint possible in warfare, when it comes to enemy civilians. Tragically, such unlucky occurrences cannot always be avoided totally (highest praise is due to the Israeli servicemen, who, even at the height of battle, tossed packages of „Plumpy’Nut“ into Gazan houses with hungry small children. Isn’t that absolutely admirable? 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻).
It’s a difficult situation, and I always think that I am (figuratively) dancing on a tightrope in this regard…
Yes, and there were and are so many more conflicts in history. So many lives to mourn…sometimes it feels like an entire universe full of sorrow 😔
