My half-baked analysis (take with many grains of salt):
The woman in the blue hijab sounds very American (F-bombs aplenty and no accent). Islam allows and possibly encourages men to treat their women badly or at least as significantly inferior. By objective North American standards, many muslim wives are abused. Rage builds inside the women and it probably wouldn’t take much to lash out at a stranger in a store. The neighbourhood is likely heavily muslim and, since she probably doesn’t drive, she’s more likely to shop within a bus ride and be more in contact with others from her neighbourhood. The other woman is also likely an American woman married to a Somali man born or American man converted into islam. She’s possibly abused too. Put two abused women together and it wouldn’t take much to set one against the other, especially when both still retain vestiges of freedom and independence in their memories.
It’s a dime-store analysis but the fight doesn’t surprise me in the least. Both women are likely be beaten when their husbands learn of their behaviour and that they exposed their hair (both lost their hijabs in the fight). I don’t understand why women would sign up for this. I’d be an exceedingly poor muslim woman. Let me count the ways ...
