My latest wild theory:

I think late in the first Trump presidency, Maher found out he was Hugh Hefner’s clone. Since Hefner reported trafficking victims to FBI, and seemed to be more conservative than we thought, it could mean Maher has been rethinking his liberalism ever since he found out.
