Kahlenberg is globally renowned as the site of the Battle of Kahlenberg on September 12, 1683, a pivotal moment in European history. During the Second Ottoman Siege of Vienna, a coalition force of the Holy Roman Empire and the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, led by Polish King John III Sobieski, assembled on the hill. From this strategic vantage point, Sobieski launched a massive cavalry charge—famously involving the Winged Hussars—that broke the Ottoman lines and lifted the siege. This victory halted the Ottoman Empire’s expansion into Central Europe and marked the beginning of its decline as a major power. The St. Joseph’s Church (Kahlenbergkirche) atop the mountain was later built to commemorate this victory and contains a chapel dedicated to Sobieski.

It’s an extremely exciting story, and there was a movie of it on youtube. Hub watched it, of special interest to him as he was born in Poland and Jan Sobiestki is a hero to the Poles.
