JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Vandalism targeting automated license plate readers has ignited a local debate over public safety and digital surveillance in the Beaches communities, echoing growing privacy concerns felt across the nation.
The investigation began on June 29 when an Atlantic Beach police officer noticed several Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras, commonly known as “Flock” cameras, had not been working.
A physical inspection revealed that multiple camera lenses across the area had been intentionally disabled with spray paint. Similar incidents of vandalism happened in Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach.
Police have since arrested 19-year-old River Blair of Jacksonville Beach in connection with the damage. According to investigators, detectives reviewing nearby surveillance footage observed a red Mazda hatchback pulling into a parking lot shortly after midnight. The video reportedly showed a male suspect carrying a ladder toward one of the camera poles before driving away a short time later.
In a twist of digital irony, investigators used data from surrounding, operational Flock cameras to track the movements of the suspect’s vehicle just before those units were also spray-painted.

Oh, I mean to say I am as far from a lib as you are likely to find.
To this day I still see people still wearing masks....I suspect these cams are a big reason.
I know how this is gonna sound but it’s just a observation.....9 times out of 10 it’s a black person.
My operative framework for this comes from Benjamin Franklin who once said:
“Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.”
These cams take pics of cars, and occupants. You can’t get past these cams. They follow you from point A to Z all day. Mask or not they know who you are. Matched with meta data from cell towers you can’t take a dump without someone knowing.
As much as I abhor the mask thing, I have been pondering that very use, to obscure face ID technology.
A real life experience to explain my apprehension. I was once accused of hitting a School Bus in Baltimore, a person gave the wrong license plate number to the police. I live 2 hours from that cesspool. It was on a workday and luckily, I have a gated entrance card ID showing I was literally at work at the time.
I needed to provide that evidence to be cleared of the hit and run. They were not having any of it until I was able to produce that evidence, I was basically guilty until then!
Now imagine a similar problem with this surveillance falsely “id”ing you on a clothing match or an unclear algorithmic face ID. Good luck with that!
Just ignore the part about those cameras frequently monitoring into private property.

There’s other ways to reach one of these cams besides a ladder.
Maybe where you live. For me, it’s about 30% black, 60% white, and 10% Asian. I can’t believe how many people still wear masks. No thanks.
