This happened because of a interstellar war and the moon at the time took the brunt of the battle and the atmosphere was stripped away and all cities destroyed leaving just craters.
The earth was hit too causing eruptions and magma to flow for millions of years wiping out civilization. This happened about 250 million years ago and again in a follow up attack 121 million years ago.
Since then the aliens have used earth as a place to test weapons.
The last test happened about 66 million years ago....
They hold a grudge.
