I worked with a guy who was from the Dominican Republic , who would swear at anyone who said he was black. He looked black, acted black. He claimed since he spoke Spanish that was proof he wasn’t black.

I asked him how speaking French helped the Haitians, everyone agrees that they are black.

Many Latin Americans apparently don’t hold ‘blackness’ in high esteem. I suppose the same could be said for other ethnic groups. I wonder why that is?

I dated a woman from Haiti. She told me that the blacks would perjoratively call people from Haiti and the Dominican Republic “reds.”

My adopted son is from the Pacific. He’s dark enough and has enough black, curly hair that he is often mistaken for a black guy. He’ll reply, “I’m not a bro!”

And oddly enough, he’s never thought anyone was prejudiced against him. A conservative, military vet who looks black and has never thought any whites hated him. What a concept!
