President Trump wants FIFA President Gianni Infantino to be the next secretary-general of the United Nations, The Post has learned.
Infantino, 56, grew close to Trump through organizing this year’s World Cup, with the Swiss-born soccer administrator bending over backward to charm and include Trump, even giving him FIFA’s inaugural Peace Prize in December.
Trump believes that Infantino “is respected by everyone around the world, and recognizes he has a special ability to bring people together,” a source close to the president told The Post.
The next secretary-general will be elected this year to replace the retiring António Guterres of Portugal, who will step down at the end of December.
To secure the position, Infantino would need to win the endorsement of the 15-member Security Council — where the five permanent members hold vetoes — followed by confirmation by the General Assembly.
It’s unclear if Infantino wants the job and to what extent Trump has discussed the topic with him.
But Trump senses a clear opening among a field that one insider described as seven “lame” candidates.
The best-known contenders include Chile’s socialist former president Michelle Bachelet, who could face US resistance, and Argentina’s Rafael Grossi, the current director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, who could face concerns from the UK over the disputed Falkland Islands.

Actually the guy would make an excellent choice. Infantino began his management career as the Secretary General of the International Centre for Sports Studies (CIES) at the University of Neuchâtel during the late-1990s to 2000. He was born on 23 March 1970 in Brig, Switzerland. He is a son of immigrant parents from the Italian regions of Calabria and Lombardy. He studied law at the University of Fribourg. He speaks French, German and Italian as mother tongues and also speaks Arabic, English, Portuguese and Spanish. He became Deputy General Secretary of UEFA in 2007 and Secretary General of UEFA in October 2009. During his time there, UEFA introduced Financial Fair Play and improved commercial support to smaller national associations and was instrumental in overturning Iran’s decision to ban women from soccer stadiums in 2007.
Under Infantino, FIFA’s revenues have more than doubled; for the 2027–2030 cycle the organization is projected to generate $14 billion, of which $2.7 billion, or about 20 percent, is to be redistributed to national associations through the “FIFA Forward” development program. And the smallest of the members as national associates are getting the biggest shares. Brazil, a five-time World Cup winner with a population of 213 million, received $6.35 million through FIFA Forward, about $94,000 less than San Marino, the world’s lowest-ranked national team, with a population of 34,000.
And best of all, in November 2025, Infantino introduced the FIFA Peace Prize, with U.S. President Donald Trump receiving the inaugural award in Washington, D.C. on December 2025. The guy’s sharp. Promote immediately.

Everybody hates commissioners, period.
Gary Bettman still gets roundly booed every year he presents The Stanley Cup. It comes with the job.

This may sound horrible but I really didn’t care. I didn’t watch one second of any game. After so many years of living within the sports world I have become more selective of what I let entertain me and international sports is not high on my list. But the one thing I have accomplished is an acceptance as to the failures of the organizations that “control” the business of each of the owners’ investments. And that’s all they are, just someone trying to make a buck on entertainment.
And look at the damage they have done:
Kids getting hooked taking pain drugs to compete
False promises to student athletes
Damage to other people’s property when the team either wins...or loses
Money that could have gone to good wasted on tickets and pennants
The permanent injuries or deaths of competitors and “fans” stretching the limits of our society to the point of teams trying to get into countries just to either spy or hide from their country’s failures
And yes, even the amount of carbon in the air during the traffic jam getting into the stadium
It runs the gambit, doesn’t it? But to answer your question the best I can I have to say it did please the people that were profiting from it financially. Everyone else is just the pig for slaughter and the sport was the apple. And I hope they were pleased with the outcome.
Sportsmanship, fair play, purity of the game, and the good moral intent of the competition no longer exists. And the heroes that play it don’t either or they would fix it at least for the little leaguers or the youth basketball, football, volleyball or soccer kids to have a clean belief in what they actually strive for even though a vast majority will never make it. And that little minority is willing to harm themselves to do so. Might as well be gladiators. At least in that, there are no left over athletes to poison the next generation. Sorry for the ramble.

Back in the 1980’s the NHL gave out a Peace Award....it turned out to be a joke. It was the “Piece Award” - given to who was it? A players’ agent?

Only the ones they are told to hate. A commissioner is an officially appointed or elected individual who serves on a commission, or a senior government or law enforcement official responsible for a specific department, district, or geographic region. Take a look at the accomplishments of Kamala Harris, Nancy Pelosi or Hilary Clinton and see if you can come up with any redeeming achievements they have executed. And with all the failure of lack of efforts, absence of compassion, destructive intentions, and all the harm they have tried to interject with people’s lives, they are the royalty of the democratic party and loved by millions.
Yet anyone attached to Trump, even the civilian unrecognized voters, are considered villains and scoundrels to be cursed, attacked and hated even though no one knows who they are or what they think. Look at ICE. All they did was their job. And they have been attacked physically and immorally just for being there. It’s not the hatred of commissioners of anything, it is the failure of the idiots doing the execrating. And we are expected to protect their rights and privileges while we overlook their failures to the point of being attacked because we don’t agree with them. And it’s all because we are not awarded those same right or privileges to love while they can hate. Welcome to a third world country.

I haven’t been able to find anything he did illegal and was found guilty of. And yes, I’m aware of the different things he has been accused of:
Swiss Criminal Proceedings in 2020
Football Leaks Investigations accusations in 2018
Accusations of Political Interference in 2026
ICC War Crimes Filing in early 2026
None proven or illegal. But he has accomplished a number of things note worthy while connected to world level soccer and FIFA. To start:
As FIFA president since 2016 included expanding the men’s World Cup to 48 teams, establishing the 32-team Club World Cup, and significantly boosting financial support for smaller nations through the FIFA Forward program. He also expanded the Women’s World Cup to 32 teams and drove up record tournament revenues. He also provided over $1.5 billion to member associations to safeguard football during the pandemic while introducing mandatory global regulations protecting women players during pregnancy, adoption, and family leave.
He’s already accomplished more good than the UN has over the last decade. With what the UN has displayed, they’d be lucky to have him.
