Have reviewed many TCRs and examined many accident photos and I kind of have to agree with you. Not a lot of crush damage. And when the vehicles burn it always looks horrific.

Best guess: The vehicles in front of him absorbed the energy "slowly" (the pulse was stretched out) and in effect acted as a crash cushion.
