The Spanish and the French sent missionaries well past the settlement line for several centuries. An example would be the North American Martyrs, Jesuit missionaries who preached to the Indians in Canada and upstate New York in the 17th Century

Don’t forget the Presbyterians while you’re at it, they sent missionaries to many Indian tribes and later established Indian schools and churches.
