When I was in school in the ‘60s, many of the teachers were veterans of WWII and/or Korea. I don’t recall any incidents of students physically attacking teachers.

Yes, but a lot if not most of these current day stories probably involve female teachers. I would imagine that, back in your day, there were far more male teachers. But with the extreme wokeness that constitutes the current education system, men are "discouraged" from becoming teachers, except for the effeminate, gay ones.

Even back then, there were plenty of female teachers, and I can remember at least two male teachers who were definitely effeminate and very possibly gay. However, if any teacher had been attacked by a student, I’m quite sure that one (or more) of the more formidable teachers would have intervened at once.

The key difference, I think, is that in earlier times teachers were given the responsibility to keep order but also had the authority to do so, and the school administration would back that authority. This doesn’t generally seem to be true today.
