My dad - a teacher - sat at a coffee table back in the early 1980s and delivered an impromptu prediction about the public schools that was uncannily accurate. In a nutshell, he said that once all the male WWII and Korean War vets retired, the school systems would be staffed by women and (unmasculine) men, with the most egotistical ones eventually becoming administrators. All public schools would become essentially Federal institutions and school boards would become de-facto NEA/AFT kommissars.
Some years later, one of dad's younger and less than friendly colleagues came up to him and admitted that he had been pretty much on the money. Equally surprising was this younger man's realization that the last few years had convinced him that "none of this" (teaching in the public schools) was making "one damn bit of difference anymore."
