ARCOLA, Texas — The mayor of a small Texas town is facing several felonies, according to Fort Bend County court records.
Mayor Fred A. Burton, 68, is charged with two counts of illegal voting, one count of misuse of official information, one count of fraud and one count of tampering with government records, all of which are felonies. He was arrested Tuesday night, according to the Fort Bend County District Attorney's Office.
In the illegal voting charges, Burton is accused of telling at least three people to vote in a runoff election while knowing they weren't eligible to do so.
In the misuse of official information charge, Burton is accused of using insider information to affect a $15,000 City of Arcola contract bid.
In the tampering with government record charge, he's accused of presenting a fake estimate to defraud the City of Arcola in 2023.
The fraud charge, also stemming from an incident in 2023, alleges Burton got some councilmembers to sign off on two checks with a combined value of between $30,000 and $150,000.
According to online records, Burton was first elected as the Arcola mayor in 2018 and was reelected in 2020 and 2022. In 2024, he was unseated by Veeda Williams. Last month, he defeated Williams to regain his seat as the city leader. He was elected to serve as mayor until May 2028. It's unclear what will happen with the position in the wake of his arrest.
Burton is being held at the Fort Bend County Jail. His bonds were set on Wednesday. They were set at $25,000 for each of the illegal voting charges, $20,000 for the misuse of official information charge, $20,000 for the fraud charge and $15,000 for the tampering with a government record charge.

Cops in Texas have launched an investigation with the help of the FBI after a small town’s Mayor received a threatening package in the mail ... which included a noose.
Arcola, TX’s Mayor Fred Burton — who’s Black — received the package Tuesday which he says contained a rope fashioned into a noose inside, plus a note urging him to withdraw from his reelection race. Police say he contacted the authorities immediately.
The Arcola community was formed predominantly by freed slaves.

Blacks, whites and hispanics all are about 1/3 of its' citizens.

Mayors can and should be non-partisan but most in the bigger cities gotta be left and as it’s a stepping stone to other offices state and federal. What I’m saying is that any of our people contemplating entering this disgusting profession should register as an independent in the beginning to get their foot in the door.
