My nephew spent his youth trying every drug that he could find. Now, he drives a truck when he might have done better in life.

If he is clean, then that is an honorable life. However, truck driving is a tough job.
I am not saying there is anything wrong with driving a truck. Do not misunderstand me.
If your son had the ability to be a public accountant, but because of drug use in an earlier life, he cut his opportunity short and ended up just becoming a bookkeeper, that would be the same thing. It’s ok to be a bookkeeper, but it is a measure of failure if he didn’t become that public accountant that he could have.
