Former South Korea men’s national team head coach Hong Myung-bo is said to be taking refuge in the United States upon resigning from his role after a disappointing 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.
Hong and South Korea failed to qualify for the knockout stages of the World Cup after coming in third place in Group A behind Mexico and South Africa.
Following a strong start to the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Czechia, South Korea lost back-to-back games and was eliminated in the group stage.
Hong resigned from his role as head coach soon after, but plenty more controversy has followed, including a government-led investigation and Hong taking refuge in the U.S.

I was surprised by the anger of the South Korean fans till I read about all the corruption and nepotism in the management of the team, and it’s a public issue for over a decade.
The thing is, if he wanted the team to lose, he couldn’t have done a better job. That’s what enraged the fans. He can never return to his homeland.
A new column in the immigrant refugee categories, losing coaches, I get it.
If Argentina lost to Cabo Verde, I guarantee their coach would not have gone back to Argentina.
Colombian player Andres Escobar scored on his own goal during a group stage match against the US in the 1994 World Cup which eventually led to Colombia being eliminated. He was murdered shortly after returning home to Colombia.
That was so sad.
No!! Go back home where you belong, accept responsibility, and face the music. Thousands of our men didn’t die for your country in order to allow you to seek refuge here because you suck as a coach.
indeed ... losing a sports match is now a reason for granting refuge?
I was just kidding, this guy might have a real reason for seeking refuge, I was making a joke.
