I’ve got a master’s degree in Physics. And I sure agree with that.
I get that sometimes pure research has unexpected practical applications.
But modern physics has gone way beyond that. Now, it’s something like:
The Q particle is made up of two dipsy particles plus one doodle particle. We suspect that the doodle particle can be broken down further. We’ll need another $2 million to confirm that.

I hear people say something happened in the 1970’s that threw everyone off the scent.
