Rhode Island has become the first state to take on big ... self-checkout?
Legislation passed and signed in the Ocean State limits the number of self-checkout lanes a store is allowed to have, and it's based on the ratio of normal checkout lanes with cashiers. The goal is to protect jobs.
Here's WPRI:
'Today, we're protecting jobs and strengthening customer service,' [Rhode Island Governor Dan] McKee said. 'Whether it's helping a customer with an issue, assisting a senior, or ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities, this law is about preserving choice and keeping people at the center of the shopping experience.'
Stores have to have one manned checkout lane open for every three self-checkout lanes.
They also have to have an employee who oversees the self-checkout area, and that employee is not allowed to be assigned any other tasks while they stand around watching people self-checkout.
The law also states that stores all have to have a manned register to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
And if you don't abide by these restrictions, it'll cost you $1,000 a day!

"Employees are encouraged to report their employers if they violate the law.

Ah yes, the old narc on your neighbor nazi directorate.

More gov’t intrusion.
Consumers and the market should decide this.
Walmart. Richmond, Ca. No self checkouts. The woman ahead of me in line explained: “If they had it we wouldn’t have no store”.
I always use self-checkout and apparently so does everyone else.
Costco has implemented a new plan. As you are waiting in line an employee comes by and scans all the items in your cart. When it’s your turn at the register you don’t have to take the items out of your cart. You’re already scanned. All you do is pay your bill. The lines go very fast!
Stores like Walmart have 8 or 9 checkout lines, but only 1 or 2 are open...
A certain ethnicity is brazen nowadays.
I’ve seen videos of them loading up flat screen TVs at Walmart, walking right out with ‘em and daring anybody to try and stop ‘em.
Couple of years ago at the Walmart where I go a female cop literally almost got beat to death trying to arrest a shoplifter.
Put her in the hospital for quite a while.
If it hadn’t been for a male detective responding as backup that animal would have undoubtedly beat her to death or took her gun and shot her with it.
Checkout lines manned by humans isn’t going to deter thugs like that.
Walmart should pull chocks and GTFO of Rhode Island.
Anymore than a few items makes self checkout suck.
This is how the left think they will outsmart AI and automation. Companies simply wont invest in their states. Then there will no jobs instead of less jobs .
Checkout lines manned by humans isn’t going to deter thugs like that.
it will if theyre holding a 12ga
“The goal is to protect jobs.” ... by deliberately making work more inefficient ... reminiscent of requiring manned elevators even when they were automatic, and requiring gasoline to be pumped by hand when all other states allowed self-fill ...
“Anymore than a few items makes self checkout suck”
Especially if you’re behind someone with a full shopping cart that’s self checking.
I can only think of one reason to self check out with a cart load.
Use code for bananas for the most expensive fruit they have .LOL
in our costco, those mobile scanner units don’t work very well, the pre-scanner clerks are inept, and when the cart is packed, it’s essentially impossible to scan all the items quickly anyway, plus you have to take your store card out a second time at the cashier stand ... we always decline the BS pre-scanning, which is a waste of time ...
“it will if theyre holding a 12ga”
The policy for shoplifting at many stores is for the employees to do NOTHING.
As a matter of fact, I’ve seen stories right here on FR about employees getting fired for attempting to detain shoplifters. Target was one IIRC.
ass backwards I know but here we are.
Marxist central planning
Ah yes, Clorette DePasto.
Queen of Charmin alternative uses. Lol
