ChinaAid Founder Bob Fu on Guo Wengui Sentencing: ‘No One is Above the Law’

On Monday, Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui was sentenced by a federal judge to 30 years in prison for defrauding his supporters of over $1 billion dollars. Bob Fu of ChinaAid, a pastor and victim of Guo’s harassment in fall 2020, called the decision “a victory for justice.”

While Guo solicited donations for his Rule of Law Society and supposed “anti-communism” cause, Deputy U.S. Attorney Sean Buckley stated that “Guo exploited the trust that thousands had placed in him for his own greed,” according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of New York.

Over several months, Guo, also known as Miles Kwok or Miles Guo, targeted multiple Chinese dissidents – including Fu, his family and Texas-based nonprofit ministry – with harassment and death threats as documented in statements and reports at the time.

On Sept. 26, 2020, when Fu was away on travel yet his family was at their home in Midland, Texas, multiple supporters of Guo came and protested outside the suburban residence. At the time, Guo falsely accused Fu of being a “fake pastor” and “communist spy.” Then Guo urged his supporters to join protests that required local police presence to protect Fu and his family.

Fu and ChinaAid were granted a federal court injunction in January 2021 that barred Guo or his supporters from picketing or approaching Fu’s residence or the nonprofit ministry’s property in Midland.

I noticed the sentencing of this Chinese billionaire, but didn't realize that it was the same clown who was behind the harassment of Bob Fu back in 2020. At the time, I recall Guo was financing a campaign to smear and defame Fu, including shipping busloads of rent-a-protestors to stand outside his home in Texas and denounce him as a communist agent (the exact opposite of reality).

My boss at the time knew Fu well (as my boss had been banned from China for Bible smuggling), and we were concerned about how far the ability of _actual_ communist agents to invert reality in the minds of the public. So this heavy sentencing is reassuring, that truth and justice can still prevail. But it underscores the importance of knowing whom you are dealing with, and not just trusting an organization because it has a good name.
