Commies were referred to as reds. Red Chinese, Red Army, etc. It was well after Better Dead Than Red that the media changed how they assigned colors to parties. It was depicted differently among the news media as to who was shown as red and who was blue, but prior to 2000, republican was often depicted as blue and democrat was red. In some cases, the incumbent party was depicted as blue and the challenger red. Then in the the 2000 election, that changed.
Does the Cold War count?

One communist too many?
How about millions of communists too late!
We only seem to feel it’s necessary to see communists as an existential threat when we are in a hot war with them, or at least a cold war that threatens to go hot.
But when we go to sleep on them, they stop conspiring.
If you wait until they reach the point where they are about to wrest control over your government and way of life, you have waited far too long, because they have already reached the point where they control far more than you can see yet.
But when we go to sleep on them, they NEVER stop conspiring. /correction
McCarthy gets a bad rap, even though we know he was right, but most are too wimpy to say so.

The villainizing of McCarthy was a very successful Democratic counteroffensive against Joe and the country fell for it. Instead of America paying attention, it fell into the Democratic trap waged against Joe because the country was convinced Communism could never happen in America. Even Yuri Bezmenov who came along later couldn’t wake up America. The country is still asleep and believes the Dems are just fighting for ‘democracy.’ Do Americans deserve what is wrought by their own stupidity? If it happens here, there will be turning back the clock because there is no one out there in the world to save our miserable asses.

Networks historically would alternate colors every election cycle up until 2000, then they arbitrarily decided that the Reds are going to be permanently blue.
