A major World Cup controversy is brewing as Iran accuses the United States of politicizing football ahead of the tournament. Iranian officials claim Team Melli faces strict travel restrictions, allowing players to enter the U.S. only on match days and requiring immediate departure afterward. Iran also says several federation officials, administrators, media personnel, and support staff were denied visas despite all players receiving approval. Tehran argues the measures create an unfair competitive environment and violate the principles of equal treatment in international sport. Iranian authorities have vowed to raise the issue with FIFA, insisting politics should not interfere with the World Cup.

The CIA was involved in the assassination of Iran's democratically elected Prime Minister, Mossadegh, in 1956. It led to the reinstatement of the Shah, who ruled until the Islamic Revolution in 1979. Both the US and Iran are guilty of transgressions.
If the Iranian soccer team had had a good time in the US, they could have returned to Iran with great reports about the US and its people. All this did was make things worse. It's a missed opportunity, IMO. I know you may disagree, of course.
I wonder what a “good time” looks like to Iranian footballers. Can you expound please?
Didn’t they try and sneak in a few IRGC members?
If they went back to iran and said anything at all positive about America, or Americans in general, they probably would have been killed.
Iran will execute you for anything
It reflects our current trust level for them. The IRGC would torture players they think aren’t loyal enough to the regime. There would be no one sharing news openly about how great America is.
And it’s leftist, whiny drivel.
This is from 3 weeks.
Iran is still competing and is scheduled to play Egypt today.
Uh, yea.
Hahaha. What are you 15?
“petty” do you even know what Iran was doing? They had IRGC members on the “staff”.
Tie their hands behind their backs and blindfold them as they are lead to the plane that flies them away. Maybe make them kneel on the ground like that for a while.
maybe you can rub some ointment on that irritation.
They’ve tried to sneak in IRGC members - sorry but not sorry - it’s a national security issue, not a politicization of the WC. To us they’re a terror organization.
This dispute can be resolved by applying the precedence of rights principle.
I worked in “Sports information” for 14 years. Trust me when i say that the players will not change the way they play one little bit if the media people are not present. The only difference is they might actually say something that will get them hung when they get home.
How many Nazis would we have allowed in the country for the 1942 World Cup? I doubt very many. They could share accommodations with the Japanese team at the time.
We are at war with Iran! Throw them the HELL OUT!!
This smells of “if only we were nicer to them, the terrorists wouldn’t kill us.”
Buck up. You aren’t the first person to ever knock a kickball into a hornets nest. Have a nice day.
Oh, those poor Iranians! To use a ‘60s expression, my heart bleeds purple peanut butter!
