The tradition of musicians playing until very old precedes rock and roll. It gets down to what drives many of them — the love of the music. Some don’t get it and that’s fine.
Rod Argent (Zombies, Argent band) kept performing until he was 79 and had a stroke. So he retired from performing but still writes music. Colin Blunstone is still going and last I checked could still hit the high notes in the bridge of Tell her No.
Many from that age group continue to play - Carlos Santana, Steve Howe, Ringo Starr, Paul McCartney. Too many to name. Oscar Peterson didn’t retire. He kept performing until a year before died at age 82.
I heard Paul McCartney recently and he needs to retire. His voice is gone.
