U.S. residents are aging and having fewer babies, with fertility rates at a record low and trailing what’s needed for the population to replace itself, part of a widespread global trend with deep economic consequences.
With President Donald Trump’s tough limits on immigration, and his effort to deport some immigrants already in the country, the U.S. may be heading for an era when the median age continues to drift up and the population eventually starts to fall each year. That would be a first for a country built by waves of religious, economic and political refugees from around the world. Economic stress on social safety nets may follow.
For most of U.S. history, more people were born each year than died. That “natural increase” has been slowing as big generations like the post-World War Two Baby Boomers aged and the generations that followed had fewer babies.
Current projections show that by around 2030, deaths will exceed births each year. Immigration, which could offset that, has become politically fraught, falling dramatically under Trump.
Should current trends hold, overall population growth is heading to zero.
The net result: Population growth has already slowed to a crawl. Since 2020, the U.S. population has increased by an average of 0.6% per year, about a third of the pace during the 1950s, in the middle of the 1946-1964 baby boom that gave the “Boomer” generation their nickname. Most of that meager growth has come from immigration. With Trump, that has been thrown into reverse and the U.S. population is on track to flatline around 2050.

Americans workers are the lowerest paid and the most productive workers in history. Until that gap closes population growth will suffer.
At 350 mil we will be good for a while longer.....
There is a difference between importing conservative Catholic and Pentecostal Mexicans and importing Somali “refugees”.
Common Sense immigration is good...good for all concerned.
But allowing anybody and everybody in makes no sense.
Keeping anybody and everybody out makes no sense.
I will start to pay attention to this nothing burger when wages for the average worker doubles.
Supply and demand dictate that if the labor market shrinks, wages will rise. That’s why Tech Oligarchs like Muskrat and Ellison obsess over shrinking populations or zero growth - they want a massive pool of workers competing with one another for the lowest possible wages - by importing as many of them if necessary.
Blame the phones.
Its called the rat race. More rats the faster the pace.
Another Freeper (who uses some variation on Nathan Bedford Forrest’s name as a handle) has made a strong case for why low population densities facilitate self-government and liberty while high population densities lead to oligarchy and bloated bureaucracy. I agree with this view, and don’t think the US has any need to have the population densities of India or China, contra the Tech Oligarchs and their cheerleaders like the repulsive Matthew Yglesias.
There is much more to it than that. Birth rates declining below 2 indicates a declining population. The institutions of society decline under those situation as does the quality of the citizens. History has shown that declining birth rates herald civilization collapse. Combined with other indications of collapse, Western Civilization is definitely undergoing collapse, and the process is accelerating.
Where is it ‘decreed’ that our population “must” increase every year? This isn’t the 1950’s anymore. With the advent of technology and all of the displacement we are told is going to be caused by AI, we should pump the brakes on population growth and especially immigration, both legal and illegal. We simply don’t need a half billion people in the US, especially with the majority of immigrants collecting some form of public assistance. If anything, we should be picking up the pace on deportations.
By this logic, Sub-Saharan Africa with its sky-high population growth (i.e. average of 6+ children per woman in many countries) should be a thriving economic powerhouse. Instead, the growth just breeds more poverty.
Happening everywhere. Not just the West.
Liars.
No Republican is against immigration. We’re against ILLEGAL ALIENS, who are not, and never have been, immigrants.
America can over come the negative birth rate by opening the border to LEGAL, SELECTIVE, VETTED IMMIGRANTS.
My Grandparents on both sides came from Italy and Chechs back in the late 1890s, but they all worked hard and there was zero freebies...it was produce or starve.
The free stuff of the demonRATs is what is destroying the USA.
A population must make use of its brains and natural resources. With a lack of natural resources, the brain should say "Move to a different place". They don't really have a civilization to begin with, do they?
That is a frightening fact.
Absolutely! They were people who actually wanted to thrive. Something seems to have gone out of modern people, and with it a willingness to contribute to the whole. Or something.
Labor became valuable after the black plague, so many peasants and craftsmen were lifted out of poverty.
