A German soccer fan discovers America
American Thinker ^ | 13 Jun, 2026 | Mike McDaniel

The World Cup soccer matches, held in various American cities, are providing not only economic opportunities but, for at least some Europeans, cultural revelations. There’s substantial truth to the old saw that Europeans will never forgive us for saving them in WWII. We’re the unsophisticated, arrogant, ugly Americans they love to disparage and hate. Americans, and particularly the southern variety, are nearly beneath contempt, though our dollars aren’t.

But for at least one German soccer fan traveling across the South, America and Americans have been a pleasant surprise. He has been tweeting his surprise and delight, and it’s a useful reminder just how good, unique, and amazing we really are and how very much we take for granted.

This German landed in the United States for some World Cup soccer and has been live-tweeting his experience.

This is the kinda stuff that'll make you once again proud to be an American.

I’ve never stopped, but let’s see America through the eyes of a young German: [numerous X posts at article link]

That’s true of much of America.

I doubt most Americans think Taco Bell is the holy land, but it’s good, inexpensive food.

Good thing he did not go to see a game in Los Angeles.

Hopefully he goes back to The Reich sooner than later.

I keep posting: this isn’t about soccer, it’s about the cultural and economic morale boost local businesses and states are getting. It’s about sharing America with everyday people around the world in good faith.

That is fair and frustrating. The man who was running against now Mayor Karen Bass would have beautified the city in time as he is the real estate developer behind the most walkable plazas in the city.

My father was a ground-pounder in WWII in France and, eventually, Germany.

When I was 1 year old we moved to LA so he could get a degree at USC...I remember the sprinklers in the lawn...now after so many years the city is a dump.

It’s a pity that dEMOCRATS are allowed to anything aside from sweeping jailhouse floors.

USC has had a few updates.... UCLA is much better maintained and manicured in my opinion. But the real crux is that the Olympics are in L.A. in 2028 and I think the EXACT same barely renovated facilities from the 1984 Olympics will be used...

The Rose Bowl and Coliseum are stuck in time...I guess So-Fi is new...

If they’re handy with the tools they should be issued green cards. With the invasion of moozlems this may be their only hope and we need them.

Re:” The beauty of America easily rivals that of Europe.”. Natural beauty, yes, but architecturally, Europe is far more beautiful. When it comes to manmade gardens, it is really no comparison.

Only if they are culturally compatible.

I will say-even though I don’t watch soccer, I fully understand the perception of many Europeans regarding the pervasive woodlands in many areas of the United States.

When I flew over to Western Europe once, I had never noticed it before, but the landscape struck me as lacking trees. Much of the ground we passed over seemed to be endlessly broken by farm land and highways, and I was surprised to notice it for the first time, as if I had never been looking out the windows.

When I returned to the States, the contrast was amazing to me. I felt as if I passed over huge swaths of land where the only thing I could see was the green foliage in the crowns of the trees below, with an occasional highway or a more heavily inhabited area with human dwellings and structures.

I thought of that contrast for a long time.

A lot of the videos by foreignors visiting the U.S. are really entertaining. Seeing them experience the U.S. and having a really positive reaction to American food and culture is a good antidote to a lot of the anti-U.S. crap out there is good to see.

To Europeans it seems like we’re wasting land, but it has to do with the soil.

Especially in the pine belt in the east, running from NJ to TX. You can raise trees and cows but not much else.

Flew back to Dulles from the UK with a plane load (or so it seemed!) of Brits. They remarked on the green and constant forests. They asked does anyone live there. I said yes, but the bears and other animals are a bother. (Yes I’m a bad boy!) At the time there was indeed a bear dumpster diving at Dulles. It was in the news and the authorities were constantly failing to chase him away or catch him. Another wildlife problem occurring at the time was beavers in the Occoquan area building a dam. They would raid peoples yards for wood. There was a nasty one that would kill cats and dogs. Eventually they were removed but it was in the papers at the time.

I think that the trump admin is taking charge of the 2028 games because the locals are so incompetent.

there’s a section of land that runs across the northern sections of georgia/alabama/mississippi and southern tennessee that has deep rich soils. It looks like that’s where this guy went
