Odd, when I was a kid, the negros from inland coming to the beach mostly stayed out of the water.

Knee deep for the more adventuresome. A wave splashing them woule cause a panic.

Does this article mention any of them actually going into the ocean?

Yeah, afraid of the water. On one past beach trip, a black co-worker’s family was also afraid of the sand crabs. I tried to tell them that the crabs were more afraid of them, but it didn’t help.
