It's you that has no idea what you're talking about. Try reading up on the 1924 Immigration Act - it severely restricted immigration, and it lasted for about 40 years.

I have a family member that came in during that period too, but on the whole, the number was massively reduced from what it was before and after. (Especially with the Hart–Celler Act of 1965.)

Your desire for more liberal immigration policy puts you in the same camp as Woodrow Wilson, Teddy Kennedy, and the George Bushes. Happy?

First generation American huh? My family is traced back to coming to America in 1751. Maybe you should study American history? We DID halt immigration starting in 1924.
