A 73-year-old motorcyclist was killed after a hit-and-run crash set him and his bike on fire in Redlands.

On June 9, Redlands police were called to a crash on Highway 38 between Amethyst and Garnet streets around 5:30 p.m.

When the motorcyclist collided with another vehicle, he was ejected from his bike, police said. Fuel began leaking from the damaged motorcycle and caught fire, setting both the bike and the 73-year-old man on fire.

The suspect driver fled the scene without checking on the victim. Their car is described as a gold or tan-colored four-door sedan. They were last seen heading east on Highway 38.

As a motorcycle rider: Yikes!

We had a an unfortunate accident on a club ride. A bike went into a deep pot hole full of water. The bike flipped over on top of the rider and killed him.

Crosswinds caught me off guard and nearly blew me off the road as I went along in 2-way traffic at 50 MPH on my '93 Honda XR250L. I sit up high and the bike only weighs 260 lbs...You stop and think "I should be dead right now!"

That's something you ride around on the upper pasture, not on the highway!

How very sad.

Husband was an avid motorcyclist - he always had one, the bigger and louder the better.

He also took all the safety classes offered by the CHP, was certified to teach those classes as well so he was an expert rider.

I told him I wasn’t worried about him on the bike so much as I was the other drivers out there on the freeways, given what I’ve seen on our Mad Max freeways and streets - speeding, running traffic lights, weaving in and out of traffic and high speeds and more. Why I carry coverage for uninsured drivers on my insurance.

I know! I know! It was one of those new Tesla robotaxis that keep crashing, killing people, and bursting into flames!

When my destination is serious farm country, I sometimes have to use paved roads as connectors to the unpaved roads I’m looking for. Another close call was being struck on the tip of my nose by a speeding June bug when I was flying through a tree-lined area with open fields all around and I hit the brakes hard. You never know what’s coming your way wherever you are. I never ride on freeways or highways where the speed limits are 55+. As a result, I do a lot of zig-zagging as I go. There’s nothing like being able to stop and take a leak in the middle of the road without being hassled!

So, who was at fault for the accident?
