I have been voting since 1968. It was a very simple process at the beginning.
1. Register to vote by showing ID and proof of residence.
2. Go to polling place, show ID, sign registration book, fill in paper ballot, drop ballot in secure box.
3. Ballots hand counted at night and results next morning.
Over these past 58 years the election process has only become more convoluted.
We desperately need the SAVE ACT to clean up the mess created by the changes made in the last 50 years or so.
IBM punch cards were first used in elections during the 1964 Presidential primary election in two counties in Georgia. They became more widely adopted in subsequent elections, notably being used by 37.3% of voters in the U.S. during the 1996 Presidential election.
And we all witnessed how that election system “improvement” worked out in the 2000 election in Florida.
