Drive through farm country in North Carolina.
We are already a soccer nation. When the kids grow up, they are not going to be playing football or baseball.

I was told that when Pele came to the New York Cosmos in 1975. Sure enough that was when all the kid's leagues and schools expanded soccer. I even gave it a try in sixth grade in prep school.
I was worthless, despite being of average build and athleticism. Part of the problem was my school was international, and the Latin American players, kids with names like Kiki Millares, and a Turkish coach (who was a solid math teacher during the day) Dr. Ararat, meant that those of us who might have taken an interest in it had never been taught the rules. We were to be tolerated.
My case might have been extreme, but 50 years later, I am still hearing the same story that today's kids will grow up being soccer-philes; and here the same Mexican youths play soccer while the Anglos play baseball and football. Certainly when we lived in Columbus, Georgia, evenn GIRLS' FOOTBALL (which I am not a fan of) seemed more popular than soccer at the high school level than soccer.
Moms might enroll their kids in soccer when they are young, but they will grow out of it like they grow out of T-Ball because it is not part of our national culture. Besides, ice hockey has everything soccer does at three times the speed.

Some of the twenty something year old guys in my office are excited for the World Cup to start this Thursday. Other twenty something year old guys don’t really care. Most of the guys over 30 don’t care. Almost none of the guys over 40 or 50 care. Virtually, none of the women care.
I just did a survey of the seven twenty something year olds sitting around me in my office.
The only ones who really care are the ones who played soccer in school. Some of them were college soccer players at smaller colleges like Merrimack.
