As ‘(Sexual Perversion) Testify to Love’ Hits #1 on Christian Charts, CCM Stars Cheer It On

The list of 90’s era Contemporary Christian Music stars rushing to cheer on and celebrate the new “gay anthem” version of Avalon’s ‘Testify to Love’ is growing, including Point of Grace (ed. note - Mr. Passons was their keyboardist in the 2000's) and Nicole Nordeman, with more supporters being added each day.

2026’s Testify to Love was rerecorded earlier this month by two former members of the multi-platinum Contemporary Christian group Avalon, hitting the top of the iTunes Christian charts.

Founding member Michael Passons, who left the group in 2003 and came out publicly as gay in 2020, joined forces with gay country singer Ty Herndon to re-release the hit song. Another former member, Melissa Greene, who was part of the band from 2002–2009 and who officiated Herndon’s gay marriage, is also featured on the track.

The song features an “all-star chorus of emerging LGBTQ artists and advocates,” including Jada Cato, Andrew Mitch, Jessica Rose, and Bryan Rub.

Notably, Passons says he was ousted by other members of the group after being caught in a compromising sexual situation with another man, saying, “they threw me out at the first hint that I violated a scripture in Deuteronomy.”

As I've learned groups that had the deviant musician as their employee support him. My concern is perversion is taking over CCM, KLVR, and worship music, and we are concerned what is happening.

What I learned years ago about Ray Boltz had me in trouble when someone blocked me on social media when I called out his material as inappropriate for church use, based on what Albert Mohler wrote in "Thinking About Thinking About Rap" in 2013.

So digusting.

This song was used in 2008 to lead an all-dance church service where youth danced to every pop song in the planet and Bibles were closed.

The teen dancers were the next step after the youth choir, with nothing for teens. They have failed. Once you leave the youth choir (no teens), there is nothing for them. Just entertainment. I found a new church in 2020 where they develop youth. This was my commentary on teens dancing to the song:

It is important to realise that the regulative principle as applied to public worship frees the church from acts of impropriety and idiocy—we are not free, for example, to advertise that performing clowns will mime the Bible lesson at next week’s Sunday service.”

“The opening hymn should be about the worship of our triune God. The hymn before the reading of Scripture and the sermon often reflects the theme of the Holy Spirits work in illuminating Scripture and empowering the preaching. And the closing hymn often reflects the central message of the hymn, calling us to action and commitment.” — Derek W. H. Thomas

Kids jiggling to a cover of Ralph van Manen’s top 40 (NL) hit is not suitable for church, as I read in those quotes above from a well known Welsh minister.

This is a Nadab and Abihu moment where Aaron’s sons sent false fire and were executed for that. See Leviticus 10:1-3.

The difference between kids jiggling to Top 40 hits and kids to learn serious song is those who do the latter are more likely to stay in church, and the former are more likely to deconstruct because of popular culture. It isn’t church.

When there is no youth choral development and teens dance to pop tunes, the consequence comes later in deconstructionist theology and kids were never taught anything.

Is there any such thing as a straight church music director?

We have one — happily married to the same woman for years, and children.

“Testify To Love”

All the colors of the rainbow,
All the voices of the wind;
Every dream that reaches out,
That reaches out to find where love begins;
Every word of every story,
Every star in every sky,
Every corner of creation lives to testify

[Chorus:]
For as long as I shall live,
I will testify to love.
I’ll be a witness in the silences
When words are not enough.
With every breath I take,
I will give thanks to God above.
For as long as I shall live,
I will testify to love.

From the mountains to the valleys,
From the rivers to the sea (rivers to the seas);
Every hand that reaches out,
Every hand that reaches out to offer peace (give peace);
Every simple act of mercy,
Every step to kingdom come (kingdom come);
All the hope in every heart will speak what love has done.

[Chorus]

[Bridge]
Colors of the rainbow
Voices of the wind
Dream that reaches out where love begins
Word of every story
Star in every sky
Corner of creation testify
Mountains to the valleys
Rivers to the sea
Hand that reaches out to offer peace
Simple act of mercy
Step to kingdom come
Every heart will speak
Of what love has done
Colors of the rainbow
Voices of the wind
Dream that reaches out where love begins
Word of every story
Star in every sky
Corner of creation testify

I understand the concern, but like most works of art, the meaning is in the mind of the beholder. I see nothing overtly “perverse” about those lyrics. If you don’t like it, don’t listen, or let your kids.
