Skilled Vape Shop Workers - From Abroad
Dear Secretary of State,
Re: Skilled Worker visa route
I am writing to you following reports that vape retailers are currently holding and potentially exploiting licenses to sponsor overseas workers through the Skilled Worker visa route.
According to these recent reports, almost 80 different vape companies across the country are listed on the Home Office’s public register of licensed sponsors for worker and temporary worker immigration routes. Meanwhile, over 90 newsagents and 100 barbershops are listed. Many more businesses are also free to hire from overseas. In the last five years, there have been over 300,000 applications through this visa route. These numbers raise serious questions.
I understand that possession of a sponsor licence does not in itself imply any abuse or wrongdoing, nor does it mean that the sponsored visa will be approved. However, I know that many people across the country have increasing concerns surrounding rogue vape shops, illegal products, organised criminal activity and immigration abuse. We need total transparency. It is important that we know how these businesses came to qualify for a route that is intended to facilitate skilled employment.
We saw reports last week that over one million young people are currently not in work, training or education. It is a total insult to our young people that people are exploiting these visa routes to come and work in Britain, and it only goes to show that our immigration system is in a complete mess. Hard-working Brits up and down the country do not want their highstreets dominated by vape shops, let alone dodgy hiring practices.
I would be grateful if you could clarify how many skilled worker visas have been sponsored by vape retailers, how many of these licenses have been suspended or revoked and how many of these businesses have been inspected by the Home Office or other enforcement agencies, including Trading Standards.
Please could you also outline what steps you are taking to verify the validity of sponsorships and to tackle exploitation from sponsoring organisations.
It is ridiculous that these businesses are continuing to qualify for sponsorship under this visa route at all. Last year alone, we saw more than 920 people arrested in targeted raids on mini-marts, vape shops, barbers and takeaways. We need a total clampdown on illegal working and much tighter controls.
Yours sincerely,
Lee Anderson MP

And these shops happen to all be run by a certain religious group from a certain s hole region that enjoys decapitating people on video while yelling about snack bars.
