The book was a big deal when it came out, but man is it dismal.

It may not be your cup of tea, it reminds me a little of ‘Johnny Got His Gun’, in its fatalistic feel.

As a survivalist I kept thinking, ‘come on man, give me something here, something, anything to work with as a survivalist’, it was only a week or so later after I had finished it that I came up with a spark of hope in the book.

Looking for a spark of hope? Well, I certainly hope you next read “One Second After” and followed up with “Five Years After.” They are both uplifting and full of hope.

Great recommendation! It’s been many years since I read Johhny Got His Gone and I should read it again.

I’m a big Cormac McCarthy fan. I really enjoyed All the Pretty Horses and Blood Meridian as well. His stories were often so bleak, but I found the underlying humanity to be incredibly moving.
