I had sort of the opposite experience. When I was a freshman they required 3 quarters of English, except the engineering students. They were only required to take 2 quarters. I was majoring in Physics and was taking exactly the same courses as the engineering students but I had to take a third quarter of English, so was stuck with taking poetry on top of my other courses.

I got out of two of the English quarters via CLEP (College-Level Examination Program) exams. I put off Speech Communications as long as i could.
