“Drag Artists for Expression NYC” (formerly Drag Queen
Story Hour NYC) has received significant public funding.

Records show the nonprofit received over $200,000 in taxpayer dollars since 2018 from New York City and State entities, including funding for appearances at public schools, libraries, and for programming, say reports.

Public Funding Details:Total Amount As of 2026 reports, city and state taxpayers have spent nearly $700,000 to boost the program, up from over $200,000 reported in 2022.Funding Sources: The group has received funding from the New York City Council, the Department of Education, the Department of Cultural Affairs, the Department of Youth and Community Development, and the New York State Council on the Arts.

Recent Funding: For the 2022-2023 budget cycle, the NYC Council earmarked $80,000 for the group, a tripling of their previous year’s allocation.Context: The programs, which involve drag performers reading to children in schools and libraries, have drawn both strong support for inclusivity and criticism from officials seeking to restrict public funds for them.
