This may not be the time to say that Garden Grove used to be known around OC as “Garbage Grove” anyway...What on earth are “notes of strong fruity odor?” Or is that simply a a problem speaking English?

It's a correct terminolgy.
Here's a medical terminology used in diabetes diagnosis.
A strong, fruity, or nail polish-like odor on your breath or in your urine is often a classic sign of Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)

Commonly used term in medical and chemical subjects. Means exactly what it says.
Diabetics who burn fats for energy, produce ketones, acetone being the most produced , and their breath has a sweet , fruity odor, or a nail polish remover odor...it could signify development of diabetic ketoacidosis, meaning get over to the ER ASAP.
