Senator Robert Byrd recruited 150 of his friends and associates to establish a Ku Klux Klan chapter in Sophia, West Virginia, in the early 1940s.

He operated primarily out of the neighboring unincorporated community of Crab Orchard, West Virginia, where he lived and worked as a butcher. After successfully recruiting the required 150 members to form the chapter, the KKK’s “Grand Dragon” traveled to a meeting at the Crab Orchard home of a local law enforcement official to officially organize the klavern, and Byrd was unanimously elected its top officer, or “Exalted Cyclops”.
