They may have. But Mr. Arnold was 98. Folks who live that long often see most, if not all, family and friends predecease them.
The people who turned out for his funeral honored his life and his service.
That was a kind thing to do.

Many likely did, but the reporter is just fluffing his job by saying their 'supporting the dead veteran' - a decent catafalque is doing that now.
People show up because they need to, for themselves. Lots to unpack there.

I’m reminded of when my friend, last survivor of the USS Arizona Lou Conter died two years ago and was buried in the small town of Grass Valley, CA. He didn’t lack for family and friends who turned out in force, but also citizens lined the streets between the church and cemetery. The schools were let out and the students walked to the cemetery. It’s a beautiful thing when “the thanks of a grateful nation” shows up to show their gratitude
