The Hatch Act & Ethics Rules: Because the position requires strict adherence to keeping the U.S. military apolitical, the Secretary is barred from taking an active, public role in partisan political campaigns.

Personal vs. Official Capacity: While they may attend political events in a strictly personal capacity, they cannot use their official title, government resources, or taxpayer dollars to affect any election.

Prior Precedents: Senior Defense Department officials historically go to great lengths to avoid the appearance of partisan political activity to preserve public trust in the nonpartisan character of the armed forces.

Never mind.

I’m not so concerned about the Hatch act in modern politics but once again we see what the priorities are of the admin. We’ve got a hot war against Iran with thousands of our troops in danger and the “Secretary of War” has nothing better to do than play stump politics and create some reality TV content.
