An Oscar-winning musician has lost her honorary degree amid fallout after an investigation found she allegedly faked her Indigenous ancestry.
Buffy Sainte-Marie, 85, was awarded an honorary Doctors of Law degree from the University of Toronto in 2019.
At the time, university officials said she was being recognized for her work in music and the arts, as well as for her advocacy for 'the rights and dignity of all people.'
But on Wednesday, a governing council at the university voted to rescind Sainte-Marie's honorary degree following a petition, CBC reports.
The decision marks just the latest honor the singer, who won an Academy Award for co-writing 'Up Where We Belong,' has lost since a 2023 investigation revealed she may have built her entire career on deception.
As Sainte-Marie rose to fame with her anti-war anthem 'Universal Soldier' and 'Now That the Buffalo's Gone' in the 1970s, she told heartfelt stories about having Mi'kmaq heritage through her adoptive mother.
Yet the CBC revealed that the singer's birth certificate showed she was actually born Beverly Jean Santamaria to white parents in Massachusetts - not the Cree woman from Saskatchewan's Piapot First Nation she has claimed to be since the 1960s.
Sainte-Marie has since denied those allegations, as she insisted the investigation into her ancestry included 'fabricated' evidence.

Uh, I don’t know about that. Faking being a primitive has only recently been a good idea. When she was young enough to matter it meant never being admitted, hired or anything much else. I recall the endless rejection and humiliation of my neighbor who was “Black Irish” not a nebro cell in his body because he looked Hispanic. That was 1960.
THAT is what Obama has passed as his “real birth certificate.” It’s not his actual birth certificate. But that’s water under the bridge….
I never liked her attitude.

Call it truth in advertising, a reminder to all potential students, current students, and graduates, that Identity Politics outweighs performance.
It's not like she received the honorary degree back in the 60s or 70s. She received it in 2019. There was no excuse for the staff at the university to not virtue signal, and instead do their homework.
She is a “pretendian”.

Back in the 1970s Indian rights was the big cause celeb of the day in the entertainment industry and lots of celebs pretended to be part Indian back then

When my mother and her siblings were in elementary school, some children talked (bragged?) about their family’s heritage. The children asked my grandfather, “What are we?” He replied, “You aint nothin but a bunch of Spanish-American Arabs.” That put an end to conversation. In truth their background can be traced back to immigration from England in the middle of the 17th century.
It was revealed on October 27, 2023, that Buffy Sainte-Marie allegedly lied about her Indigenous ancestry. A CBC investigative report published that day found a birth certificate showing she was born in Massachusetts to white parents, contradicting her claims of being Cree from Saskatchewan.
The exposé was published by CBC’s The Fifth Estate on Oct. 27, 2023, which featured findings that she was born Beverly Jean Santamaria on February 20, 1941, in Stoneham, Mass.
Family Evidence in the report included testimonies from Sainte-Marie’s biological family members in the US, who stated she was not adopted and had no known Indigenous ancestry.
In 2023, Sainte-Marie explained that “she was told” she was adopted.
As of January 3, 2025, she was officially stripped of her “Order of Canada” honor following the investigation.-——Canadian Broadcasting report
