Paul McCartney on Trump’s America: ‘All at Each Other’s Throats’

Paul McCartney, a longtime peace-oriented individual, still has an opinion on President Donald Trump and the effects of his administration.

In a recent episode of the podcast The Rest Is Entertainment, the Beatle spoke about how his music sometimes has the power to unite people despite their different backgrounds and political beliefs.

"I mean particularly these days, too, you do something like 'Hey Jude' and you see this whole audience singing together," he said before turning his attention specifically to the president. "And in Trump's America — and the Republicans and Democrats all at each other's throats — when we do that song, they're not.

"They're all loving it and they're all, it's like, 'Wow, this is pretty amazing,' you know? That suddenly this room has forgotten all of that and it's not, you know, going to argue with each other. We're all just going to sing together."

A Theme in Paul McCartney's Writing

In another recent podcast interview — this time with The Rest Is History — McCartney doubled down on the idea of making music that inspires harmony and hope.

"I think it's a theme in my stuff, in my writing, that even though stuff is hard. you are going to have to carry on or let it defeat you," he said. "I think that's very much from the wartime years that all of us grew up in. We'd seen the film of Hitler's bombers, you know, clouding the sky. And you'd seen the Belson pictures of the prisoners coming out in their striped uniforms, which is why I can never believe people deny the Holocaust. I mean, that is so insane. I think that's why there was quite a rich period for us, our generation, that we could now do good stuff and say, hey, it may be bad, but we can work this out. We can work it out."

I agree. Paul has always leaned left, but in a “Can’t We All Just Get Along” way.

He actually has a new album coming out May 29. Heard one song from it. It’s a very pretty, well constructed (of course) song, but it’s a bit reflective and somber. His voice is rough, but he’s 83 years old, for Pete’s sake.

I’m looking forward to hearing the whole thing.

I’m not going to fault the guy. He made one mention of Trump, not many, and really didn’t seem to lay this at Trump’s feet. It was more of a shorthand for the present day.

I'm with you on this Laz.

I’ve been waiting for him to dis Trump the same way he dissed W 20 years ago. If Trump ever gets asked for a response here it is: “You people are mistaken. Paul is dead. Have you ever listened to a Wings album?”

Of course that's true, but never underestimate the bitter sour-pusses that have to read sinister motives into every informal comment.

Paul only went after John in one line from one song: the magnificent “Too Many People.” The line was: “Too many people, preaching practices…”

John thought that was about his and Yoko’s anti-war shenanigans, including the pompous and ridiculous “bed-in.” And John was right. Paul’s slight job was exactly about that.

And then John went full-on narcissistic sociopath in response. But that’s how John rolled…

Paul, they shot the guy who wanted to talk to them and then they celebrated his death.

Hey McCartney

The song sucks ass. It always has.

If you had any talent you would have written Dear Prudence. Or Revolution. Or Nowhere Man.

Or even Help.

What a total ass. In Trump’s America, democrats are radical as hell and want to stop anything he tries to do. It is not Trump that is causing it you f’n idiot, it is your radical friends that act like children when they don’t get their way.

I dunno. On football Reagan had the opportunity to explain the game and Lennon listened like an ‘attentive schoolboy’. Mighta been on Monday Night Football when they met with Howard Cosell. You know Lennon hated Nixon so meeting Reagan mighta made him see the light just like Jack London and Orwell.

He should write about the harmony of Islam and the daughters of Britain.

I remember when knighted men actually did something to defend or advance the British kingdom.

Under Paul’s watch, Britain’s daughters are gang-raped by Islamic intruders at the expense of the British taxpayer.

I remember that Monday Night Football game, because, of course, Lennon appeared in the booth briefly. At the time, Lennon was a strident leftist, or a shameless grifter for leftist causes (you choose).

Interestingly, there are many people who claim he came to like Reagan just before he was murdered. It’s also been claimed he was starting to lean right politically, but, sadly, we’ll never know. John was an enormously talented songwriter, but he never had the chance to mature as a person. Truly, a damn shame.
