South Carolina’s top court on Wednesday undid the murder convictions against Alex Murdaugh, the lawyer a jury had found guilty of murdering his wife and one of his sons in a trial that captivated the country.
In a unanimous opinion, the state’s supreme court said that “shocking jury interference” by a court clerk who oversaw jurors during the 2023 trial meant that Mr. Murdaugh’s convictions must be overturned.
The nearly six-week trial ended with his conviction in March 2023. Jurors deliberated for less than three hours before determining that he had killed his wife and son. Prosecutors had described the murders as a desperate bid by Mr. Murdaugh to gain sympathy as his lies about drug use and theft were on the verge of being exposed.
Mr. Murdaugh, 57, will remain in prison because he also had pleaded guilty to various charges related to stealing millions of dollars from his law firm and his former clients. While he has admitted to embezzlement, he has long maintained — including during testimony at his trial — that he did not kill his wife, Maggie, 52, and his younger son, Paul, 22.
The ruling does not automatically mean he will face a new trial, though prosecutors are expected to pursue one.
The two victims were found shot to death in June 2021 on the family’s hunting estate, in a rural part of South Carolina known as the Lowcountry. The case went unsolved for more than a year before Mr. Murdaugh was arrested.
The case drew enormous attention because of the family’s storied history in the region. The Murdaugh family ran a prosecutor’s office and a prominent law firm there for decades, and Paul Murdaugh at the time of his death had been facing charges of drunkenly crashing a boat, killing a teenage passenger.

The family had lots of enemies before and even more after the son’s deadly boating accident. The entire family was disliked. We live in the low country and the one thing I have heard, over and over, is that Alex Murdaugh adored his sons and wife. I have a hard time believing he blew his son’s head off at close range. The prosecutions theory was he did it to get sympathy for his financial crimes, which is absurd. Also, two different guns which were never found? Why two guns, possibly two shooters?
he's still in jail for the next 40 years..
Federal Conviction (2024): Murdaugh pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering. He admitted to stealing approximately $12 million from his law firm’s clients over several years. Sentence: He was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison, with credit for time served.
“The state did not prove he didn’t prove he did it.”
If I understand the entry, they did prove he did it in the first trial. The state isn’t saying he did or didn’t do it for the purpose of tossing out the first trial. They are saying a clerk didn’t do something right and took the fair trial out of it. If the evidence is there, and the first jury found him guilty based upon it, then this technicality doesn’t change the evidence. He’s still guilty, just have a second trial and use the evidence provided. The defense is trying to stall the state into not having a second trial because of expense and all their judges have overloaded dockets. So he won’t be found not guilty but he’ll be on the streets.

He will never be released. He is serving long time for other crimes. Let’s just say I am close to an attorney who is deeply involved in this matter. It makes no sense that he would murder his wife and son who he adored. Remember, he is an attorney with a long family history in the low counties of SC; lots of enemies. He’s a scumbag for sure, but that does not make him a murderer. Lots of circumstantial evidence and he has lied unnecessarily, which definitely hurt his case.
I don’t know if he did, or didn’t, but there is some fishy stuff in the background that make me doubt that he did.
Actual evidence used in the case was damning.
The Kennel Video (Crucial Evidence): A video found on Paul Murdaugh’s cell phone, recorded at 8:44 p.m. on June 7, 2021, placed Alex Murdaugh at the scene of the crime (the kennels) minutes before the murders. This directly contradicted his statement to police that he was not at the kennels that night.
Data from phones, cars, and home security indicated a timeline fitting the prosecution’s theory. This included rapid movement and a 911 call after the killings, with evidence showing Murdaugh’s phone was on the move or being used around the time of the murders.
Prosecutors argued that overwhelming pressure from immense financial crimes (stealing from clients) led Murdaugh to commit the murders to buy time and evade exposure.
A box containing 300 Blackout ammunition was found in the home, matching the type of ammunition used in the assault rifle that killed Maggie. Even though the guns were never found, the guns used in the fatal shootings of Paul and Maggie were like guns belonging to the Murdaugh. He had lied to investigators about not being at the scene of the crime that night. He claimed that his decades-long opioid addiction had made him paranoid, and he feared he would be suspected if he told the truth. Alex Murdaugh was a practicing attorney at the time his wife and son were murdered on June 7, 2021.
Forensic experts testified that significant gunshot residue (GSR) was found on Alex Murdaugh’s hands, clothing, and a blue raincoat, with a high concentration of 38 particles found inside the coat. The residue was found within six hours of the murders, and particles were also present on his shirt and shorts.
They’ve got him there, they’ve got the type of weapons used that are missing they owned, they have GSR on him less than six hours after the shooting, and he lied about different aspects of the case. If it was worth doing, then do it right.
