A Labour MP says if a cabinet minister does not put themselves forward to challenge Keir Starmer by Monday, she will attempt to trigger a leadership contest herself

In an exclusive BBC interview, Catherine West says she currently has 10 MPs who are prepared to back her and is "confident" enough MPs will come forward to trigger a contest

This is a big moment, writes the BBC's Henry Zeffman, with West kicking off a process that could lead to a leadership battle

Earlier, Starmer admitted that Labour had made "unnecessary mistakes" but said he would not walk away following heavy election losses in Wales, England and Scotland

He also appointed Labour veterans Gordon Brown and Harriet Harman as advisers

I think Starmer threatened his party with general elections if they tried this on him. It was probably a bluff, but we’ll see.

I take it she’s worse than Stammerer.

The left always replaces a failure with someone worse.

Regardless of whether it’s stupid Starmer, or some other labour twat... The Labour party will be in charge until 2029.

They currently have a massive majority and in the UK’s parliamentary system where election dates are now typically set, the next general election won’t be until the 15th of August 2029.

The Labour party could hold the election earlier... But why would they? They are heading for almost certain defeat and why would you rush the inevitable.

So for those who think Labour is finished... They will be finished... On the 15th of August 2029. Until then they will do their best to screw up the UK even more than they have already.

She’s a non-entity but a “stalking horse” to surface the real challengers

,,, with Starmer they've got to the bottom of the barrel. His own Party have known it and bitten on the steel bar for so long.

She needs 81 votes. Unlikely.

“,, with Starmer they’ve got to the bottom of the barrel.”

There’s no such thing as the “bottom of the barrel” with the left. Their barrels are bottomless.

Ms West said she already has 10 people prepared to back her, but this is well short of the 81 required to start a leadership election.
