U.S. forces disabled the Iranian-flagged M/T Hasna as it attempted to sail to an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman, when an F/A-18 Super Hornet from USS Abraham Lincoln disabled the unladen oil tanker's rudder, hitting it with several rounds from a 20mm cannon gun. All three vessels are no longer transiting to Iran.

Disabling a tanker makes no sense. Someone else has to fix it.
They then work for us and our oil(+Venezuela’s) gets sent to Europe-even China as they’ll be hurtin’
Not disabling a tanker leaves two choices: allow them to proceed to the Iranian port through a “blockade” which is a defeat, or boarding the vessel and seizing it.
We exist in such a risk-averse state now that a potentially risky boarding at sea could result in loss of life on the ship and in the boarding force, not to mention possibility the entire vessel. And there are no doubt Iranian hard liners who would find a way to put teams of hard-liners on vessels intended to run the blockade.
Doing so could result in a firefight, ending in a conflagration that could sink the ship in a narrow and shallow choke point. They certainly wouldn’t care if the Iranians were all killed as long as they took some of our people and equipment with them. After all, these were the same people who used humans as mine detectors in the Iran-Iraq war. And even if the same people aren’t still calling the shots, the exact SAME types of people are calling the shots.
Disabling it and having it towed to internment seems to be the least risky course of action.
It does if you want to disable the refineries without blowing them to bits.
Are these the empty tankers that were headed into Iran?
And I’ll just toss this in....

This is fascinating...

Yes. We donโt want them to make it to Iranian ports to serve as additional petroleum storage capacity.
Bingo.
**a risky boarding at sea could result in loss of life on the ship and in the boarding force and there are no doubt Iranian hard-liners who would find a way to put teams of hard-liners on vessels intended to run the blockade.**
Most of the vessels’ crews-a dozen or so-are most likely foreigners. Can’t fortify them as they’re not really military in nature and they’d have to get on the boats first.
**Are these the empty tankers that were headed into Iran?**
Gotta be empty. The rudders are exposed and Iran wouldn’t be importing the stuff.
Gotta wonder if the motivation of these ship captains is wanting to be shot at. Then there’s those machine guns mounted on the little speed boats. You know those people must have a death wish. Who’d volunteer for that?
Some may be remotely operated drone boats.
But if what Max Afterburner reported on his YouTube channel yesterday is accurate, we have a variety of ways of dealing with them, too.
” We donโt want them to make it to Iranian ports to serve as additional petroleum storage capacity.”
Better to dump the excess oil into the Gulf?
It does seem like these are bait ships sent out by the Iranians to draw USN in closer. Last I read they were hundreds of miles away when not doing Freedom of Navigation ops.
The ships could be rigged as traps. It was the right call to just disable them.

Yes, I suspect the weak sisters in our midst suffering severe TDS will suggest we provide the Iranian Mullahs with additional petroleum storage capacity so they donโt have to curtail production at the wellheads.
I get your point-but even if not Iranian flagged, they are headed there no doubt with ill intent as the flagged nations surely knows. I don’t know what calculus they would employ about boarding a team of die-hard Iranian IRGC fanatics, but I hold open that is possible.
I assumed it was empty and the rudder was exposed, so I agree there.
Also, I agree it has to be fanatical motivation. They know they would get destroyed with little chance of escape. In a sexually oppressed religion, those 72 virgins HAVE to be a draw for them. (SMH)
Right. It is hard to imagine the logic behind this. I has to be destructive logic, not constructive in nature.
Agree. The tankers should be prizes of war.
That would work.
