A Frontier Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles reportedly struck a person walking on the runway at Denver International Airport on Friday night, according to the airline.

The incident happened during takeoff at around 10:15 p.m.

In audio traffic control recordings, the pilot can be heard saying the engine caught fire and smoke was in the aircraft before telling ATC the plane had to be evacuated on the runway.

Out of precaution, the passengers used slides to evacuate, Frontier Airlines said in a statement.

"We are investigating this incident and gathering more information in coordination with the airport and other safety authorities," the Frontier statement read, in part. "We are deeply saddened by this event."

The Airbus A321 had 224 passengers and seven crew members on board, according to Frontier. It was scheduled to land at Los Angeles International Airport at 12:16 a.m., but it appears it had been rescheduled for Saturday morning.

The engine can suck a person into it with the person just standing there.

usually, it’s just a large bird being sucked into the engine that’s the problem ...

I read an interesting book about World War II and the Burma theater, or China.

The rural people had a sort of superstition, where Bad Luck would follow you around. Can’t really argue with that, I know the feeling sometimes.

But, they had a somewhat disturbing idea on how to break the spell. They would dart across aircraft runways, juuuust missing getting run over. The idea was the bad or evil jinny spirit would get run over, you see.

ATC does not condone this.

those big turbofan jet engines suck in a massive volume of air to combust the fuel ...

In the USAF and working on KC-135s when running engines on the ground at high rotations I often saw pools of rain water picked up from the ground and sucked into the engines. We always had pens in front to keep people from accidentally walking in front during such tests.

I don’t think you have to get terribly close in order to get sucked off the ground and ingested. I’ve seen films.

Strong suction from the engine - like this case from 2022:

"On December 31, 2022, Courtney Edwards, a 34-year-old ramp agent for Piedmont Airlines was fatally sucked into a running jet engine at Montgomery Regional Airport in Alabama.

Edwards was approached by the strong suction of the left engine on an Embraer E175 jet while attempting to position safety cones. She was pulled off her feet and ingested into the operating engine, causing the aircraft to shake violently before an automatic shutdown."

Helluva way to go.

While at Kunsan Air Base, Korea, 1975-1976, no less frequently that every 25 minutes, there was a warning broadcast on Armed Forces Radio against being in front of the engines of the F-4 Phantom fighters for this very reason.

You’d think there’d be enough fentanyl around Denver to provide an easier and less painful suicide alternative to trespassing onto an airport tarmac and offing yourself in a running jet engine. Stupid hurts in so many ways.

“Even switched off, it takes some long, agonizing seconds before the force slacks off enough for the sailor to be pulled back out.”

Vactors (big sewer/mess cleaning vacuum trucks) are like that too. One getting attached to you is a very bad situation and it takes 10’s of seconds for them to wind down. 5000 cfm, 27 in/Hg. One sucked the Tyvek off a coworker once, and we heard of a competitor employee that had one catch him at the waist which left like a foot diameter hickey/bruise and made one of his testicles suck up inside him. it can apparently suck the blood out through your skin also. It’s like portable “outer space”.

Suicide by plane... A rather novel idea that hopefully won't become too much of a fad.

I can’t believe a person was sucked into a plane engine. How far away does one have to back up when a plane is taking off?
