Steven Spielberg Warns Hollywood Must Invest in Original Stories or Movies Will ‘Run Out of Gas,’ Debuts Eerie New Trailer
Variety ^ | Apr 2026 | Brent Lang

Steven Spielberg premiered a new trailer at CinemaCon on Wednesday for “Disclosure Day,” his return to summer blockbuster filmmaking after a decade mostly spent making personal dramas (“The Fabelmans”) and prestige fare (“West Side Story”).

The film’s plot has been shrouded in secrecy, but it involves visitors from another planet and a vast government conspiracy to cover up their arrival. It’s a genre that has been good to Spielberg over the years, inspiring classics such as “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and hits like his remake of “War of the Worlds.”...

“I’ve been curious ever since I was a little kid with what was happening in the night sky,” Spielberg said...

“The world became more accepting of the fact that we probably are not alone,” Spielberg said. The director’s certainty that intelligent life is out there has only grown in the nearly 50 years between the release of “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “Disclosure Day.”

At CinemaCon, Motion Picture Association CEO Charlie Rivkin presented a visibly emotional Spielberg with a “one-time honor, the America 250 award,” which was followed by a conversation... It marks Spielberg’s first visit to the exhibition industry trade show.

“I promise you this will not be my last,” Spielberg promised after receiving a standing ovation...

Spielberg stressed that studios like Universal need to keep investing in original films like “Disclosure Day” instead of reboots, sequels and spinoffs.

“If all we make is known, branded IP, we’re going to run out of gas,” Spielberg said. “There is nothing more important than giving the audience visual stories, and they can be in any form, but we need to tell more original stories.”

Spielbergs “Star Wars” was Vietnam—except the “good guys” were the VC!

Maybe they should try a remake of The Wizard of Oz with an all black cast again?

It’ll kill this time.

If you can, get a free trial subscription to Disney and watch “Togo”. Disney really screwed up when it made this as it reminiscent of when they made great movies.

There are only 6 plot types: Six Basic Story Types: Researchers at the University of Vermont used sentiment analysis on over 1,700 novels to identify six emotional arcs: Rags to Riches: A steady rise in fortune. Riches to Rags: A steady fall in fortune (tragedy). Icarus: A rise followed by a fall. Oedipus: A fall, rise, and subsequent fall. Cinderella: A rise, fall, and final rise. Man in a Hole: A fall followed by a rise.

and all humans can do it just change characters to fit in these plots. For the most part it’s all been said and done we just change the names, dates and places.

Duh - after 2 versions of “Cape Fear”, they have “revived it as a series....most movies/series these days are just rewrites of old ones.

Lack of originality is one problem. The other is this, I tried to find a movie to watch recently. Here’s how it went:

1. Black male/white female couple.
2. White male/black female couple.
3. Kid’s movie (not a problem)
4. Lesbian couple.
5. Black male/white female couple (which they waited until the middle of the movie to introduce)

Before all the “you’re just racist comments”, yes, I am. Don’t waste your time. But the problem is the brain washing. The proportion of mixed race couples and homosexuals in movies (and of course commercials) is way out of synch with reality and becomes too distracting.

If they wanted to make an original alien movie they could take some of the so-called non-fiction stories from one of Dr. Jacobson's books and pretty much script them word for word.

Creeeeeepy....

Marketing.

The reason for this interview is marketing his new film.

They could have asked his opinion of canned tuna. The point is the interview creates "buzz".

Next will be the news reports of UFO sightings which just happen to mention Steven has a new UFO movie.

You're being played.

They don’t get it.
Heartland is a Canadian show with 19 seasons.
Good values .
Strong make and female role models.

But Hollywood so t make a show like that.
Strange

“Darkness at Noon” by Arthur Koestler would be a good book to make into a movie, but Hollywood would foul it up like the “Animal Farm” remake.

Correct. I only see the same themes over and over. Vet has his or her past come to kill them for some war secret, or same returns to hometown to war with the corrupt town. The SciFi section isn’t any better. Astronaut saves the world from disaster of microbe or climate change. Back in the 50\60’s the scifi writers were thinkers and had new ideas that sometimes were used in the science community. Have a great day.

Waste of time. Just keep recycling old stories with new twists.

Sadly independent channels on Cable TV have followed the same downfall.
I used to enjoy IFC and SUNDANCE due to their great foreign moves uncut and no commercials.
Now both are nothing but old TV comedy shows over and over. Often a modern movie cut to pieces for commercials.
I still miss my SAMURAI SATURDAYS on IFC twenty years ago.
Only TCM is left but now it is beginning to show some later movies which I do not care for.

Good point. I just saw the reboot of Running Man.

Stupid stupid movie. AND of course Ben Richards has a black wife and caramel colored child for some reason.

No, more misdirection by a major culprit.

Reboots are just fine, just leave out the politicking. Tell a story, not lecture.
